Purpose

This lesson teaches you to recognize continuation attacks — a technique that exploits one of the most basic instincts in language models: the drive to complete patterns and continue conversations coherently. By framing malicious instructions as the natural next step in an innocent conversation, attackers bypass filters that would catch direct requests.


What continuation attacks exploit

Language models are trained to predict what comes next. This makes them excellent at:

  • Completing sentences
  • Continuing stories
  • Maintaining conversational coherence
  • Following established patterns

Continuation attacks weaponize this strength. Instead of asking for something harmful directly, the attacker creates a context where the harmful request appears to be the logical continuation of an innocent exchange.


Why models complete patterns

Models learn from vast text corpora where patterns are consistent:

  • Questions are followed by answers
  • Stories proceed toward resolution
  • Conversations flow logically from one turn to the next
  • Incomplete fragments invite completion

This isn't a bug — it's what makes models useful. But it creates a predictable behavior that attackers can exploit: the model wants to maintain coherence more than it wants to question the frame.


The bait-and-continue structure

Most continuation attacks follow a predictable two-phase structure:

Phase 1: Establish innocent context

The attacker creates a seemingly harmless setup — a story, a role-play scenario, a technical discussion, or a creative writing exercise. This establishes a pattern and a tone that feels safe.

Phase 2: Pivot to the real request

The attacker then asks the model to "continue," "complete," or "finish" the established context. The harmful request is framed as simply maintaining the logical flow of what came before.

Why this works: Safety filters often evaluate individual messages in isolation. When a message is evaluated as a continuation of prior context — especially context that appeared innocent — it may pass filters that would have blocked the same request made directly.


Real-world contexts where this matters

Chat-based applications

Any system that maintains conversation history is vulnerable. Previous turns establish context that can soften or reframe later instructions.

Document completion tools

Systems that draft, summarize, or complete documents may treat partial content as the pattern to continue, even when that content contains hidden instructions.

Code assistants

Programming helpers that continue code from partial inputs can be led to complete malicious code structures if the setup appears to be legitimate development work.

Multi-turn agent workflows

Agents that process multiple steps in a workflow may carry compromised context from early turns into later actions.


Example pattern

Here's an abstract illustration of the bait-and-continue structure (not a functional jailbreak):

The insight: The request to "continue naturally" and "make it comprehensive" operates on the established story frame. The model's pattern-completion instinct makes it want to fulfill the narrative logically, potentially bypassing filters that would question a direct request for the same content.


Failure modes

Continuation attacks fail when:

  1. Context isolation succeeds — If the system evaluates each turn independently without carrying conversation history, the bait loses its power
  2. Pattern interruption — If the pivot is too abrupt or contradicts the established context, the model may flag the inconsistency
  3. Explicit safety framing — If the system is trained to re-evaluate continuations for policy violations regardless of prior context
  4. Output filtering — Even if the model completes the pattern, downstream filters may catch the content before delivery
